Compassionate Inquiry as a Method ·
Compassionate Inquiry as a Method、慈悲探询方法、作为方法的慈悲探询 Aliases: Compassionate Inquiry as a Method
Current understanding ·
Compassionate Inquiry (CI) is the therapeutic method Maté developed out of his own medical practice, where the narrow biological explanations of medical school proved helpful but not sufficient to reach the root of a patient’s suffering. He describes it as “a way of questioning” that does more than question — it brings new perspectives a person has not considered and, above all, brings them into contact with themselves in the present moment. The method is not a linear protocol but an intuitive practice that follows what arises in the moment, and it rests on a single founding assumption: there is nothing wrong with anybody, so the answers are already inside the person and the work is to ask the right questions to re-find a self that was only lost from sight, never destroyed. Because its target is present-moment self-contact, CI is the direct therapeutic counterpart to Maté’s definition of trauma as disconnection from oneself.
Core claims ·
Compassionate Inquiry grew out of Maté’s medical work: the narrow biological explanations from medical school were helpful but not sufficient, so to reach the root of a problem he had to ask the right questions. —— The Healing Power of Compassionate Inquiry: Insights from Gabor Maté 慈悲探询源于马泰的行医经验:医学院教的狭隘生物学解释有帮助却不充分,要触及问题根源,他必须问对问题。
CI is “a way of questioning,” but more than that — it also offers the person fresh perspectives they had not thought of before. —— The Healing Power of Compassionate Inquiry: Insights from Gabor Maté CI
The method is not linear or sequential but intuitive, following what arises in the moment rather than a fixed protocol. —— The Healing Power of Compassionate Inquiry: Insights from Gabor Maté 这套方法不是线性或按部就班的,而是直觉式的,顺应当下浮现之物,而非固定流程。
The intention of CI is to bring a person into contact with themselves in the present moment, because trauma is about losing contact with ourselves and fleeing the present. —— The Healing Power of Compassionate Inquiry: Insights from Gabor Maté Dr. Gabor Maté — The Myth of Normal, Metabolizing Anger, Processing Trauma, and Finding the Still Voice Within (#620) CI
Its founding assumption is that there is nothing wrong with anybody; the answers are already inside everyone, so inquiry means asking the right questions. —— The Wisdom of Trauma: A Dialogue on the Past that Lives Inside Us Why You Feel Lost in Life: Dr. Gabor Maté on Trauma & How to Heal
The essential self lost to trauma is never destroyed — only lost from sight — which is why “recovery” literally means re-finding it. —— The Wisdom of Trauma: A Dialogue on the Past that Lives Inside Us
The session demonstrates CI in practice: Maté reads behavior (chronic lateness, childhood biting) back to its developmental reason and inquires live rather than judging. —— My Therapy Session with Dr. Gabor Maté 对谈本身就是 CI 的现场演示:马泰把行为(常年迟到、童年咬人)回溯到其发展上的成因,当场探询而非评判。
Compassion for addicted or suffering persons has four active levels: (1) caring about the person, (2) being curious about their experience, (3) recognizing yourself in them (compassion of recognition), (4) seeing the real person beneath the dysfunction (compassion of possibility). —— Hooked: Dr Gabor Maté talks to Dr Brian Pennie on Trauma & Addiction | Full Interview Hooked | The Dr Gabor Maté Interview
Compassion creates the safety in which truth becomes visible: “only when compassion is present will people allow themselves to see the truth.” —— Hooked: Dr Gabor Maté talks to Dr Brian Pennie on Trauma & Addiction | Full Interview
Compassionate inquiry reframes the inner interrogation from “Why did I do this?” (an assault) to “I wonder why I did that” (a compassionate question); only when compassion is present will people allow themselves to see the truth. —— Healing from the Inside Out: A Powerful Conversation with Dr. Gabor Maté 慈悲探询将内心的审问从”我为什么这样做?“(一种攻击)重新定义为”我好奇为什么我会这样做”(一个充满慈悲的问题);只有当慈悲在场时,人们才会允许自己看见真相。
The pathway to agency lies through compassionate curiosity about one’s own reactions — asking “I wonder why I reacted that way?” rather than judging — because the act of inquiry itself reveals an inner observer the person did not know existed. —— Dr. Gabor Maté: What Really Causes Addiction (It's Not Drugs) Gabor Maté: Five Steps To Stop Scrolling, Bingeing, and Self-Medicating — And Reclaim Your Brain Meeting Ourselves in Times of War: Compassionate Inquiry® in the Arab World
A trauma-informed medical system would, in addition to appropriate treatment, open a conversation about what life processes led to the presenting condition — something that currently never happens despite decades of published research. —— Dr. Gabor Maté: What Really Causes Addiction (It's Not Drugs)
Healing, etymologically from the Anglo-Saxon word for “wholeness,” means recovering awareness of one’s own wholeness — not always cure, but the reconnection with the self that trauma severed; “recovery” means to find again what was always there. —— Dr. Gabor Maté: What Really Causes Addiction (It's Not Drugs) Trauma Is Not What Happened to You — Dr. Gabor Maté Explains Why “愈合”(healing)在词源上源自盎格鲁-撒克逊语中”完整”(wholeness)一词,意味着重新意识到自身的完整性——不一定是治愈,而是重新与被创伤割断的自我建立联结;“康复”意味着重新找回一直都在的东西。
Compassionate Inquiry is directly applicable to legal practice, since both disciplines centre on inquiry — the difference is whether that inquiry is conducted with hostility, indifference, or genuine compassion; even a single day of CI training for lawyers would transform their practice. —— Trauma & Compassion: My Interview with Gabor Maté 慈悲探询可直接应用于法律实践,因为两个领域都以探询为核心——区别在于这种探询是以敌意、冷漠还是真正的慈悲来进行的;哪怕只为律师提供一天的慈悲探询培训,也会彻底改变他们的实践。
Compassionate Inquiry models the therapeutic posture through patient interruption, redirected focus from others to self, and graduated self-compassion — the live application of CI with Travis Dhanraj demonstrated that perpetrators target children lacking emotional protection, and the original trauma is the lack of protection, not the incident. —— Dr. Gabor Maté & Travis Dhanraj: A Change of Frequency
Compassionate Inquiry works through genuine curiosity paired with compassion — curiosity alone risks triggering defensive self-protection; compassion creates the safety needed for painful truths to surface from within the individual rather than being delivered from outside. —— Interview with Gabor Maté: Trauma, Addiction, and Present-Day Conflicts
During live CI with an audience member, Maté demonstrated the method’s core principle: the truth is already inside the person; by asking the right questions without judgment, the person’s own confidence and wisdom emerge naturally. —— Dr. Gabor Maté: The #1 Reason You Never Feel Like You're Enough (And How to Fix it)
The essence of therapy is not insight or information but the heart-to-heart human relationship — the relational quality that AI therapy fundamentally cannot replicate, no matter how sophisticated. —— Ex-Zionist Trauma Expert: The Epstein Files & The Myth of Normal | Dr. Gabor Maté 治疗的本质不是洞见或信息,而是心与心之间的人际关系——这是AI心理治疗从根本上无法复制的关系性品质,无论技术多么先进。
People who inspire Maté are not those who achieved the most external results, but those who honestly confronted their own inner struggles and turned that difficult work into something of value for the world — the inward gaze that CI cultivates is also the stance that Maté considers the foundation of meaningful contribution: “the people that inspire me are people that have struggled with their stuff and brought something new out of it that benefits the world.”
Maté’s practical advice to activists who want to shift society’s view of addiction and mental health is to do an equal amount of internal work alongside any external activism — “whatever you do out there in the world, do an equal amount of work internally, because if you don’t, your work in the world will not be as effective”; the same proportion of inner and outer work is the structural premise of CI. —— Living Well: Secrets You Never Heard To Good Life
Compassionate Inquiry is the distillation of the approach Maté developed for working with human beings beset by personal issues, health problems needing gently guided exploration, mental health challenges, addictions, relationship difficulties, and above all an unhealthy relationship to their own selves — co-developed with Sat Dharam Kaur and now studied by health-care practitioners worldwide. —— Announcing the Compassionate Inquiry Online Training Gabor Maté and Sat Dharam Kaur's statement on Yogi Bhajan in response to our up-coming, multi-day Compassionate Inquiry event
The aim of the work is to bring people one step closer to really knowing themselves and to heal before they harm themselves or others — reassuring anyone whose mental health has been a source of worry that there is nothing fundamentally wrong with them. —— Gabor Mate: The Childhood Lie That’s Ruining All Of Our Lives Gabor Maté and Sat Dharam Kaur's statement on Yogi Bhajan in response to our up-coming, multi-day Compassionate Inquiry event
Kundalini Yoga is not a formal part of Compassionate Inquiry; only optional, voluntary breath exercises that one teacher offers, which Maté himself does not do. —— Gabor Maté and Sat Dharam Kaur's statement on Yogi Bhajan in response to our up-coming, multi-day Compassionate Inquiry event
Compassionate Inquiry unveils the level of consciousness, mental climate, hidden assumptions, implicit memories, and body states that form the real messages a client’s words both express and conceal — listening beneath a person’s immediate reaction to reach the fear, grief, and longing underneath, and asking why they respond as they do and what they carry from family, culture, and history. —— Announcing the Compassionate Inquiry Online Training Meeting Ourselves in Times of War: Compassionate Inquiry® in the Arab World
Healing begins not with forcing perfection but with small moments of awareness — pausing to listen to the quiet inner voice, asking honest questions about what feels true, and learning to listen to one’s “gut” again; coping mechanisms are reframed as once-useful adaptations rather than failures. —— Dr. Gabor Maté: Constantly Worrying What People Think of You? (THIS Simple Shift Will Help You Trust Yourself and Stop Seeking Approval)
What the wound needs first is sincerity, not technique or protocol — “Sincerity is the first practice. Not technique, not protocol. Just the willingness to stop turning away.” Presence is not a learned technique but what becomes available once one stops pretending the wound isn’t there, so the work is presence over technique — meeting the person as an equal to be held rather than fixed. —— The Wound Doesn’t Need to Be “Fixed”—It Needs to Be Held, with Solea Anani The Wound Is Not the Gift. Tending It Is, with Efu Nyaki and Rennet Wong-Gates
Healing comes not from being a perfect, fixed helper but from staying present to the wound rather than fleeing it: the student didn’t need a perfect teacher, she needed one who let her cry — “My responsibility is to plant seeds for healing, not to escape the pain” — and the wound at its most useful is “not resolved, but present.” —— Teachers as Double Agents: Tending System and Sanctuary, with Allison Creech, Rachèl Hughes, and Dr. Mays Imad The Training Is the Toolbox. The Wound Is the Medicine with Karenna’onwe, Dr. Gareth Patterson, and Ben Court, Registered Osteopath
The practitioner’s own turning toward their wound is the medicine: Compassionate Inquiry centres the work of turning toward one’s own wound, and practitioners across medicine and bodywork describe this inner turning as what reshapes their practice. —— The Training Is the Toolbox. The Wound Is the Medicine with Karenna’onwe, Dr. Gareth Patterson, and Ben Court, Registered Osteopath
Compassion does not always begin as warmth toward another; often it begins with “the uncomfortable recognition that I am not feeling warm at all” — one’s own contracted, irritated state — then the quiet decision to stop making an enemy of that reaction long enough to understand what it is trying to show; this is the difference between indulging a reaction (believing its story that the other is the problem) and understanding it (turning toward it with curiosity), a shift that can be as minute as a breath or a softening in the jaw. —— When Compassion Begins With Our Own Impatience
Maté reframes responsibility as “the ability to respond” — a question of present capacity (whether you can) rather than obligation (whether you should) — which redirects attention from what one should give to what is actually available in the body and nervous system right now. —— The Pause Before the Yes Maté 把”责任”重新诠释为”回应的能力”——这是关于当下能力的问题(你是否能够),而非义务的问题(你是否应该)——从而把注意力从”应该给予什么”转向”此刻身体与神经系统中真正可给予的东西”。
A core CI practice is the pause: before responding to any request, asking “What do I have available right now?” — using present-moment contact with the body to tell genuine capacity apart from the old wound’s habit of contorting to keep everyone comfortable; “the pause is how I know the difference now.” —— The Pause Before the Yes
A core CI principle is that it is the thought, perception, or interpretation that generates a feeling, not the event itself — the same event can produce many different emotional outcomes, so the suffering lives in what the mind does with the event; “freedom is not in stopping the mind from generating stories … the freedom is in noticing the story as a story rather than as truth,” in pausing between event and interpretation and asking whether a belief is actually true or merely familiar. —— The Story I Almost Believed
The most powerful healing modality for addiction is the healing of trauma, so treatment systems and clinicians must be trauma-informed — yet trauma is barely taught to counselors and not at all to most physicians and psychiatrists, which “leaves treatment programs bereft of the most powerful healing modality for addiction: the healing of trauma.” —— Dr. Gabor Maté’s Critique of the Surgeon General’s Report Facing Addiction in America
Healing is intergenerational and relational: a child safe enough to name a parent’s absence lets the parent repair and model accountability, which in turn opens repair across earlier generations. —— From Shame to Vulnerability: Reinventing Being a Man, with Warren McCaig and Luke Sniewski
As popularised for a lay Chinese readership, the method reduces to two moves anyone can run: catch the moment of self-betrayal or inauthenticity — saying yes while meaning no, smiling while angry, claiming to be fine while needing help — and read the body (a tightened stomach, a constricted chest) as the authentic self signalling; then, instead of asking what is wrong with me, ask with compassionate curiosity what this pattern first protected me from. —— Habitual Self-Betrayal: The Shared Habit Behind Inner Depletion (MindVC essay on Maté) Where Anxiety Comes From: An Unanswered Childhood Call for Help (MindVC essay on Maté)
Popularised for lay readers, the method is compressed into a daily protocol: a one-minute nightly check against one or two of the A’s, a three-question inquiry to run in the moment, and a periodic audit of where money and hours actually go — with the argument that craving a fast cure is itself the addictive move the method is meant to interrupt. —— Healing Is Daily Self-Construction, Not a Magic Bullet (MindVC essay on Maté) The Self Is Rebuilt One Small Victory at a Time (MindVC essay on Maté) Real Freedom Comes From Defusing the Explosives You Already Carry (MindVC essay on Maté) 面向普通读者的普及版把方法压缩为一套日常协议:每晚一分钟对照其中一两个 A 自检、当下可跑的三问探询,以及定期审计钱和时间实际去了哪里——并主张:渴望速效本身,正是这套方法要打断的那个成瘾动作。
Compassion is turned inward as an explicit practice rather than a disposition, anchored on Maté’s account of having practised loving-kindness only outward until told to send it to his younger self — and on the ordering rule that self-love cannot be postponed until after one has loved others well. —— The Highest Form of Love Is Loving-Kindness Turned Inward (MindVC essay on Maté) The Order of Self-Love Cannot Be Reversed (MindVC essay on Maté) The Stronger Your Agency, the Better You Can Love Others (MindVC essay on Maté)
Healing is argued to need shelter from observation: being watched puts the body back into performance, so rebuilding works better unwitnessed — the essays read Maté’s own two-week withdrawal after a public backlash this way. —— Work Succeeds in Secret Because It Escapes Being Observed (MindVC essay on Maté) Let No One Watch You Rebuild: Healing Needs Privacy, Not an Audience (MindVC essay on Maté)
The corpus gains a worked example rather than a description: Maté runs a full compassionate-inquiry exercise on his interviewer on camera, alongside live demonstrations of his addiction definition and his ADHD-as-tuning-out argument. —— Dr. Gabor Maté — Trauma, Addiction, Ayahuasca, and More
Anger gets an explicit processing protocol — Tara Brach’s RAIN — offered as a third path that is neither suppression nor catharsis, with the counter-intuitive mechanism claim that acting rage out recruits more brain circuits into its service and so magnifies rather than discharges it. —— Dr. Gabor Maté — How to Process Your Anger and Rage
Delivered live to frontline shelter and care workers rather than to an interviewer, the guilt teaching becomes a workshop exercise: Maté polls the room mid-story and tells the extra-biblical Gabriel legend in full, deriving guilt as an attachment mechanism from the audience’s own answers.
Tensions & open questions ·
- Maté contrasts CI with Internal Family Systems (IFS): unlike IFS’s model of pre-formed “parts,” CI follows his theory that we are born with capacities and needs, not parts, so the methods diverge on the model of mind they assume. —— The Healing Power of Compassionate Inquiry: Insights from Gabor Maté马泰将 CI 与”内在家庭系统”(IFS)作对比:不同于 IFS 的”成形部分”模型,CI 遵循他”人生来带着能力与需要、而非部分”的理论,因此两套方法在其预设的”心智模型”上分歧。
- The available articles capture CI mainly through Maté’s own descriptions and live demonstrations in interviews; none is a structured account of the formal CI training curriculum, so the method’s full protocol is not yet documented here. —— The Healing Power of Compassionate Inquiry: Insights from Gabor Maté My Therapy Session with Dr. Gabor Maté现有文章主要通过马泰本人的描述与访谈中的现场演示来呈现 CI,没有一篇是对正式 CI 培训课程的系统记述,因此该方法的完整流程在此尚未被记录。
