Summary · 摘要
A MindVC editorial essay — written by the Chinese editors of the members-only reading room, applying Maté’s framework rather than reproducing his words — that takes an ordinary social problem (someone you cannot stand) and reads both standard answers as trauma responses. Confrontation is the adult version of the childhood fight response, so a person who blows up is not handling the present conflict but re-enacting an old one, fighting the authority he could not fight as a child; endurance is the continuation of the freeze response, learned when the threat could not be fought, and is described bluntly as self-betrayal rather than virtue. Both are automatic, and neither addresses what is actually happening.
Before offering an alternative the essay sorts dislike into three sources, because the right response depends on which one is operating: projective dislike, where the trait you cannot tolerate in others is the part of yourself you have disowned (disliking selfishness while suppressing your own legitimate needs); trauma-triggered dislike, where the other person’s behaviour lands on an unhealed childhood wound and, in the essay’s most quantified line, a hundred per cent of childhood emotion is projected onto five per cent of present reality; and boundary dislike, a healthy signal that your limits are being crossed. The first two call for inner work, the third for outer action — that division is the essay’s organising insight.
The costs of each default are then itemised. Confrontation floods the nervous system, shuts the prefrontal cortex, locks the relationship into an adversarial mode, and shrinks the self from a whole person into a combatant. Endurance somatises — jaw and neck tension, digestive trouble, autoimmune reactions, fatigue and insomnia — and burns energy in suppression, in maintaining surface harmony, in internal dialogue and in post-hoc rumination, energy that could have gone to creation and connection. The third way, aware distance, has three components (inner awareness of how much of this belongs to the past, emotional containment that lets the feeling exist without obeying it, and chosen action rather than reaction) and a four-step drill: brake in the body with three breaths and the feel of the floor; inquire inwardly about what the emotion is protecting; manage energy by withdrawing or self-soothing; then respond consciously with I-statements, stated needs and openness — or decide deliberately not to engage at all. The closing reframe is that healing is not ceasing to dislike but ceasing to fear disliking.
Key points · 要点
- Both default responses to disliking someone are read as childhood survival responses replayed in adult form: confrontation as fight, endurance as freeze.
- Dislike is sorted into three sources, and the correct response depends on which is active.
- Projective dislike: the trait you cannot tolerate in others is your own disowned part — intolerance of selfishness masking suppressed needs.
- Trauma-triggered dislike: a hundred per cent of childhood emotion projected onto five per cent of present reality.
- Boundary dislike is healthy and informational — it reports that limits, resources or dignity are being violated.
- The organising rule: the first two kinds of dislike require inner work, the third requires outer action.
- Confrontation costs: cortisol surge, prefrontal shutdown, emotional brain in command, chronic stress and immune damage over time.
- It also fixes the relationship in an adversarial mode and shrinks the self from a whole person into a combatant.
- Endurance costs: somatisation into jaw and neck tension, digestive problems, autoimmune reactions, fatigue and insomnia.
- The energy audit of suppression: repressing the feeling, maintaining surface harmony, internal dialogue, and post-hoc rumination.
- Chronic endurance produces surface harmony with inner estrangement — role-play rather than a real meeting.
- The third way, aware distance, has three parts: inner awareness, emotional containment, and chosen action.
- The containment shift mirrors the shame essay’s grammar: from I am hateful to I feel dislike right now.
- The four-step drill: bodily brake, inner inquiry, energy management, then conscious response or a deliberate decision not to engage.
- Dislike is reframed as a mirror for self-knowledge rather than a weapon against another person.
- Conscious separation is allowed as a legitimate outcome — leaving with respect rather than with rage.
- The closing claim: healing is not the end of dislike but the end of fearing it, and the person you dislike is coping with pain in his own way.
Selected quotes · 摘引
No verbatim quotes: this is a Chinese-language editorial essay by the MindVC editors rather than a record of Maté speaking.
The essay places many sentences in quotation marks and attributes them to Maté — including the observation that people who blow up are re-enacting childhood rather than resolving the present, the warning that chronic endurance is self-betrayal, the line that the body will express what you dare not, and the definition of emotional maturity as retaining the freedom to choose a response while feeling intensely. All are given in Chinese with no source reference, so they are recorded here as editorial paraphrase, not as quotations.
