Summary · 摘要
A MindVC editorial essay, written by the reading-room’s Chinese editors rather than by Maté himself, applying his definition of addiction to romantic love. The argument starts from the observation that love and opiates act on the same neurochemical system, so love qualifies under Maté’s behaviour-neutral definition of addiction: anything craved for the short-term pleasure or relief it brings, harmful in the long run, and not given up. Where endorphins are underdeveloped because childhood attachment needs went unmet, the intense connection of a relationship becomes a temporary anaesthetic for a physiological ache; where love was intermittent and unreliable, the dopamine craving loop that drives gambling addiction is reproduced in the relationship itself.
The essay then traces the childhood programming. A child suppresses authenticity to preserve attachment, and the adult repeats that trade — clinging to a relationship at the cost of the true self, because that was the original survival strategy. If love was conditional (“you are worth loving when you are good / successful”), the adult equates being loved with being needed and being useful. Love-addiction is thus defined as the attempt to solve an early, internal wound with an external relationship: relief in the short term, deepened self-estrangement over time.
The second half is the counterweight. Healthy love genuinely is the remedy, because a brain wounded in relationship must heal in relationship: a stable bond gives the hypervigilant nervous system a secure base, lowers cortisol, and lets the prefrontal cortex regulate again; non-judgmental witnessing directly contradicts the childhood belief that the real self must be hidden; and repeated positive exchanges rewrite the internal working model from “expressing a need gets refused” to “expressing a need may get a response.” The test offered is simple — does this love bring you closer to yourself or further from it? The path out, drawn from Compassionate Inquiry, is to treat the craving as a messenger rather than an enemy, practise authenticity in small honest statements, distinguish loving someone from needing someone to soothe one’s own anxiety, and finally become one’s own secure attachment figure.
Key points · 要点
- Love and heroin act on the same neurochemical system, which is why love can be both the deepest remedy and the most disguised addiction.
- Maté’s definition of addiction — craved for short-term relief, harmful long-term, not relinquished — is behaviour-neutral and therefore applies to certain forms of love.
- Endorphins are described as the body’s own painkiller and attachment chemistry; healthy love activates the same system that opiates hijack.
- Where childhood needs went unmet, the endorphin system stays underdeveloped and the person lives in chronic “connection hunger” that a relationship can temporarily anaesthetise.
- Intermittent, hot-and-cold love activates dopamine craving in the same pattern as gambling addiction, producing obsession rather than security.
- The essay keeps Maté’s reframing of the diagnostic question: not “why the addiction” but “why the pain.”
- The attachment-versus-authenticity trade is the programming mechanism: suppress the true self to keep the bond as a child, repeat it as an adult by clinging to unhealthy relationships.
- Conditional childhood love produces an adult equation of being loved with being needed and being useful — an addictive value-exchange logic.
- Love-addiction is defined as using an external relationship to solve an internal, early-formed pain and self-estrangement.“爱瘾”的本质被定义为:用一段外在关系去解决内在早年形成的情感痛苦与自我疏离。
- Remedy-love works by giving the nervous system a secure container: lower cortisol, restored prefrontal regulation, a body chronically in fight-or-flight learning to repair.
- Being witnessed without judgment is named as the healing core, directly contradicting the trauma belief that the real self must be hidden to be loved.
- Repeated positive relational experience rewrites the internal working model — from “expressing a need gets refused” to “expressing a need may get a response.”
- The discriminating question: addictive love asks what it can extract from the other; remedy love asks what the two can build together — and the test is whether you move closer to or further from yourself.
- The Compassionate Inquiry path: treat the pattern as a messenger, ask what earlier pain it was protecting you from, practise small honest expressions, separate loving from needing, and finally become your own secure attachment figure.
Selected quotes · 摘引
No verbatim quotes: this is a Chinese-language editorial essay by the MindVC editors rather than a record of Maté speaking.
The essay does put several sentences in quotation marks and attribute them to Maté — notably that heroin feels like a warm soft embrace, like a mother holding an infant, and that a healthy relationship is the meeting of two whole people rather than the patching together of two halves. They are given in Chinese with no cited source, so they are recorded here as editorial paraphrase, not as quotations.
